Mumbai Indians have shown a lot of faith in the 31 year old. Suryakumar Yadav who was signed in 2018 IPL auctions for INR 3.2 crores by MI has grown a lot while playing for the five time champions. In the same year he proved his worth as he was the team’s highest scorer. The Mumbai based cricketer scored 512 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 133.33. Since then, Yadav has been consistently scoring 400+ runs for MI in the past years.
SKY is one of the four players MI have retained ahead of the mega auctions. He has been picked ahead of Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan for INR 8 crores.
After the departure of Ishan Kishan and Quinton De Kock, it is understood that Suryakumar Yadav might be promoted and given the opening slot for Mumbai Indians. Skipper Rohit Sharma who was previously seen opening the innings with Quinton De Kock might continue to do so.
But the 34 year old might demote himself in order to strengthen the team’s top order. Here we discuss the possible opening pairs for MI alongside Suryakumar Yadav. MI might target one of these players in the upcoming mega auctions:
- Quinton De Kock
The 29 year old South African who has recently announced his retirement from test cricket has had great success with the franchise since arriving in 2019. The wicket-keeper was MI’s highest scorer in his first two seasons. But his form dipped last season where he only managed to score 297 runs.
The Proteas player can pair up with Suryakumar Yadav in the opening slot. De Kock has the taste of the league and is good at scoring quick runs in the powerplay. The left and right hand combination will also help the team as the opposition will be forced to make changes in the field frequently.
- Jason Roy
The five time champions will be in search of a destructive opener and there’s no better option than the 31 year old Englishman Jason Roy. Roy is one of the most destructive openers in limited overs game and has proved his mettle in the past playing for England in T20Is. Roy has scored 329 runs in 13 games in the Indian Premier League.
He first came into the scene in 2018 and smashed an unbeaten 91 runs innings. He replaced David Warner in the second leg of the 2021 edition of IPL when Warner made it clear that he will not be playing for the orange army anymore.
- Jonny Bairstow
Another Englishman to join the list is the 32 year old wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow. Baistow is a sweet striker of the ball and specially when it comes to spinners. Besides being an aggressive opener, Bairstow can also take the gloves for the five time champions.
Bairstow made his IPL debut for SRH. In his debut season he scored 445 runs with the willow in 10 games at a strike rate of 157.24.
MI need an opener who can strike the ball well and provide a good start to the team. His abilities to go behind the stumps is what makes him the perfect candidate for the job.
