TATA IPL 2022: Possible Opening Partnership of Kolkata Knight Riders

The Madhya Pradesh based cricketer Venkatesh Iyer was one of the players who made a name for themselves in the 14th edition of IPL. While opening the innings for KKR, Venkatesh Iyer scored 370 runs in 10 games at an average of 41.11. He made his debut against RCB and scored his first fifty against MI. His performance helped the Knight Riders get closer to their third title but were defeated by CSK in the finals.

Owing to his match winning performances in the IPL, he was given a chance to play for India in the ICC T20 World Cup in UAE. He made his T20I debut against NZ in the marquee event.

Venkatesh Iyer has impressed the KKR management and was one of the four players the franchise retained ahead of the mega auctions. The 27 year old was picked up ahead of Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana. Iyer who was signed for INR 20 lakhs initially took home INR 8 crores ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auctions.

Here is a list of three players who can pair up with Venkatesh Iyer in the opening slot for Kolkata Knight Riders:

  • Shubman Gill

The young 22 year old Indian international cricketer has been KKR’s vital player over the past seasons. The two time champions signed him in 2018 after his stellar performance in the U-19 CWC for INR 1.8 crores. Gill has scored 400+ runs consistently in the past two seasons while opening the innings for Kolkata. He has been KKR’s highest run getter in the past two seasons. In 2021 he managed to score 478 runs in 17 games at an average of 28.11.

The duo of Gill and Iyer worked wonders for KKR as they got off the team with a good start. Therefore, the two time winners would like to get the duo back on the pitch.

  • Rahul Tripathi

KKR might regret the decision of letting go the 30 year old cricketer who has been a consistent performer for them. He had a memorable season with the Knight Riders in 2021, where he managed to score 397 runs in 17 innings. Rahul has played for the Knights in the top order but can bat anywhere.

Rahul Tripathi is an aggressive player and can get the team off to a good start. He has opened the innings in the past while playing for RPS in 2017.

Kolkata Knight Riders have released their skipper Eoin Morgan who took them to the finals of the tournament in 2021. Therefore, the two time champions are in search of a captain as well as an opener. The Australian left hander is the best option in the table. He has made it clear that he does not wish to play for SRH. Warner has led SRH to win their maiden IPL trophy in 2016 and can do the same for the Knights as well.

Moreover, he was the first overseas player and the fourth overall to cross 5000 runs in IPL. His captaincy and hard hitting ability makes him the perfect option for KKR.
