TATA IPL 2022: Possible Opening Partnership of Chennai Super Kings

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been an exceptional player for the four time champions in the past two seasons. In Chennai’s title winning season in 2021, Ruturaj won the orange cap as he was the highest run getter in the league. Gaikwad scored 636 runs in 16 games at an average of 45.35. Gaikwad became the youngest player to win the orange cap in the cash rich league.

Owing to his stellar performances in the last two seasons, he was one of the four players CSK retained ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auctions. Gaikwad took home INR 6 crores in his third season in the league.

Here is a list of three players CSK might buy in the auctions to pair up with Ruturaj Gaikwad in the opening slot:

  • Faf Du Plessis

The former South African skipper has been a vital cog in Chennai Super Kings success over the past years. The 37 year old was re-signed by the yellow army in 2018 when they made a return to the IPL after two years of suspension. Du Plessis has been a consistent performer for the four time champions. In the 2021 IPL, he was the second highest run getter in the league. He scored 633 runs in 16 games. He played a vital 86 run knock in the finals against KKR.

The duo of Gaikwad and Du Plessis has done wonders for CSK in the past seasons and the four time champions would like to acquire the services of the 37 year old in the mega auctions.

  • Ambati Rayudu

Since joining Chennai Super Kings in 2018, Rayudu has been a vital player for MS Dhoni’s side. In the 2018 edition of IPL, Ambati Rayudu was the team’s highest scorer as he scored 602 runs in 16 games and helped the yellow army win the league for the third time.

In 2019 after being ignored in Team India’s World Cup squad, Rayudu announced his retirement from international cricket. But the 36 year old continued to play for CSK. Ahead of 2021 IPL auctions, Rayudu has made it clear that he wishes to play for CSK.

Ambati Rayudu who has proved his worth in the IPL might get an opportunity to open the innings along with Ruturaj Gaikwad after the departure of Faf Du Plessis.

  • Rahul Tripathi

The Maharashtra based cricketer might be the perfect one to open the innings for Chennai. Rahul Tripathi has been released by KKR ahead of the auctions. The 30 year old Indian cricketer has played along with MS Dhoni in the past with Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017. The right handed batsmen used to open the innings for RPS and did considerably well with them. He scored 391 runs in 14 games in that season at an average of 27.62.

Rahul Tripathi was in top notch form with KKR in 2021 where he scored 397 runs in 17 games and helped them reach the finals. But he missed the finals due to an injury he sustained.

Rahul Tripathi might be the perfect pick for CSK as he has played with his Maharashtra teammate Ruturaj Gaikwad in the domestic circuit.
