Suresh Raina: Profile

Suresh Raina was born on 27th November, 1986 in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

At the age of 14, Raina decided to play cricket and therefore moved to Lucknow to attend Guru Gobind Singh Sports College. He was soon appointed as the captain of the Uttar Pradesh U-16 team. At the age of 15, he was named in team India’s U-19 squad which toured England. At the age of 16, Raina made his Ranji Trophy debut against Assam.

Raina made his ODI debut in 2005 but could not cement his place in the team.

CSK picked Suresh Raina in the 2008 IPL auctions for INR 2.6 crore. Raina justified his price tag and put up a stellar performance in the inaugural season of the tournament in which he scored 421 runs in 16 games. As a result of which, Raina regained his spot in the Indian team. Raina was a finisher for team India as the top and the middle order were taken by senior players in the team. In following season too Raina scored about 434 runs in 14 matches for his side.

In 2010, Raina was named as the ‘best fielder’ by BCCI ahead of the finals of the IPL. Raina scored a half century in the finals against MI and eventually won the tournament for the yellow army. His highest score in the IPL came against KXIP in 2013 when he scored an unbeaten 100.

In 2016, when CSK received a two-year suspension from the BCCI, Raina was picked up by Gujarat Lions. Raina was named as the captain of the squad and was bought for INR 9.5 crore. He scored a decent performance for the side scoring 399 runs in 15 games. However, Raina left for Netherlands because of the birth of his child and therefore missed his first match in 9 seasons of the tournament.

When CSK made a comeback in IPL in 2018, Raina was resigned for INR 11 crore. In the first match of the following season, Raina made headlines by becoming the first batsmen to reach to a total of 5000 runs in the IPL.

In 2020 during the UAE leg of IPL, Raina returned to India after playing a couple of matches citing personal reasons. In the following season, Raina became the 4th player in the history of the IPL to play 200 matches.

CSK bought Raina for the first time in 2008 for INR 2.6 crores. In 2016, Raina was bought by CSK in the auctions for INR 9.5 crore. He was re-signed by CSK in 2018 for INR 12.5 crore.

Suresh Raina is not one of the four players CSK have retained ahead of the mega auctions. Therefore, big bucks might flow in the auction to acquire the services of the 35-year-old.

Which teams should go for Suresh Raina in the mega auctions and why?

Suresh Raina is one of the most consistent players in the IPL. The 35-year-old is still one of the best fielders in the league. Teams like Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings might break the bank for Raina as they need an experienced middle order batsmen in their teams.

In teams like KKR, RR and KXIP where the core is mostly comprised of young talents, Suresh Raina would add experience to the squad.
