Sunrisers Hyderabad: History, Performance in IPL, Owner, Brand Value and All you need to know

The Sunrisers Hyderabad is a franchise cricket team that represents the city of Hyderabad, Telangana and features in the Indian Premier League. The franchise was founded in the year 2012 after Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL. The franchise plays their home games in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. New Zealand Kane Williamson leads the side in the IPL. The team won their first IPL title in 2016. 

SRH won their maiden IPL trophy in 2016 under David Warner’s leadership. David Warner has won three orange caps while playing for the Hyderabad based franchise. Since 2016, the franchise has reached to the playoffs in every season till 2020. 

History

Sunrisers Hyderabad debuted in the 2013 edition of IPL replacing Deccan Chargers who were terminated in 2012. SRH is owned by Sun TV Network who won the bidding rights for INR 85 crores. The franchise earned a five-year deal after the Deccan Chargers were terminated due to prolonged financial issues. SUN TV Network is India’s largest media and entertainment company with 32 TV Channels and 45 FM Radio Stations. 

In its inaugural season, SRH retained 20 players from Deccan Chargers. A total of 13 slots were left to be filled. SRH picked up Darren Sammy, Quinton De Kock, Thisara Perera, Nathan McCullum. Kumar Sangakkara led the side for nine matches after which Cameron White was handed the duties. They reached to the playoffs in the inaugural season but were defeated by Rajasthan Royals.

Owner

After SRH went bankrupt in 2012, SUN TV Network acquired the rights to the franchise for INR 85.05 crores for five years. Kalanithi Maran is the chairman and founder of SUN TV Network. Kalanithi’s daughter Kaviya Maran is the CEO of the franchise, has been often spotted during the games and is seen in the auction table. 

Brand Value

The brand value of the Hyderabad based franchise was estimated to be around $59.4 million in 2019. Due to the covid-19 pandemic in the country the brand value of the franchise dipped considerably. As of 2020, the brand value of the franchise was estimated to be around $57.4 million.
