Sunil Narine: Profile

Sunil Philip Narine was born on 26 May 1988 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Narine caught the attention of the selectors when he picked up all ten wickets in a trial match. He was immediately called up for Trinidad and Tobago side in 2009. The mystery spinner also played his first-class debut match against Leeward Islands.

Although Narine did not impress much in the domestic circuit, but he was called up for the West Indies squad in the inaugural season of the Champions League T20 in 2009. Narine impressed in the Caribbean T20 league in 2011.

Narine was drafted into the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in 2012 after his consistent performances in the shortest format of the game. He was bought for 700k USD in the IPL 2012 auctions. Narine turned out to be masterstroke for the knight riders. He managed to pick up 24 wickets in the tournament which was the second highest in the 2012 season. He played a vital role in bringing the first title to KKR. Narine was named as the Player of the tournament in that season. His wonderful performance in the IPL won him a place in the West Indies test squad. He replaced injured Kemar Roach in the team.

In the following season, Narine picked up another 22 wickets in 16 games but the Knight Riders did not perform well in that season.

Narine’s variations and his unique bowling technique often tricked the opposition batsmen. Narine could bowl the regular offie, the carrom ball, the dossra, the knuckle ball and the nifty straighter one too.

During the 2014 Champions League T20, Narine got into some serious trouble due to his bowling action. He was subsequently banned from playing the finals of the tournament. He withdrew himself from the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup as he needed to work with his bowling action.

He made a comeback in the West Indies squad in November 2015 and was banned again. Two Days prior to the start of the IPL, he was cleared by ICC and was ready to play again.
