Rohit Sharma: Profile

Rohit Sharma was born on 30th April, 1987 in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Rohit joined a cricket club in 1999 with his uncle’s money. His coach there Dinesh Lad asked him to change his school to Swami Vivekanand International School. Lad used to work there as a coach and the cricket facilities there was much better than Rohit’s previous school.

Initially he was a off-spinner but Dinesh Lad noticed his batting skills and asked him to open the innings.

Sharma gained the limelight when he scored 142 runs against North Zone. He was drafted into India A team and toured Australia and Abu Dhabi.

However, things started better when Yuvraj Singh was injured and Rohit Sharma was brought in the squad for the inaugural season of the ICC T20 World Cup. The 20-year-old scored his first half century against SA. Rohit Sharma’s brilliant innings helped team India beat the Proteas in their own den.

Due to inconsistency and poor shot selection, Rohit Sharma could not cement his place in the Indian team. He was not selected for the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup at home.

In 2008, Rohit was signed for Deccan Chargers in the IPL for a price of 750k USD. In the first two seasons, Rohit scored more than 350 each for Deccan Chargers. He was then picked by Mumbai Indians in the 2011 IPL auctions for 2 million USD. He smashed his first IPL ton against KKR in 2012.

He scored 538 runs in the 2013 IPL and was also named as the captain midway through the season. Rohit led MI won their first IPL trophy in 2013.

Since then, Rohit has been Mumbai Indians lucky charm as he led the franchise to five IPL titles. That makes him the most successful skipper in the league followed by CSK’s MS Dhoni with four titles.

As a player, Rohit has the most number of titles (6). He has won one with Deccan Chargers and five others with Mumbai Indians.

In 2021, Rohit was named as the skipper of team India in T20I cricket after Virat Kohli decided to step down as the captain. Just before the South Africa tour, Rohit has been named as the full-time skipper in ODI cricket and also Virat Kohli’s deputy in tests.
