Rajasthan Royals: History, Performance in IPL, Owner, Brand Value and All you need to know

The Rajasthan Royals is a franchise cricket team which features in the Indian Premier League representing the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The team plays its home games in Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur. The franchise was founded in the year 2008 and won the inaugural season of the tournament under the captaincy of Shane Warne. In 2015, the franchise was suspended for two years over their involvement in the 2013 IPL betting case. They could not participate in the 2016 and 2017 edition of IPL but returned to the tournament in 2018.

History

In 2008 when the BCCI announced the establishment of a T20 league, Rajasthan Royals was one of the eight original teams to play from the inaugural season of the tournament. The Jaipur based franchise was owned by Emerging Media for $67 million making it the least expensive team in the league.

In 2015, the franchise was banned for two seasons due to their involvement in the 2013 IPL betting controversy. Co-owner Raj Kundra, husband of Bollywood Superstar Shilpa Shetty was banned for life.

Owners

In 2008, Rajasthan Royals was sold to Emerging Media for $67 million making it the least expensive amongst all the eight franchises. Bollywood Actress Shilpa Shetty along with husband Raj Kundra bought 11.7% stake of the franchise in 2008. However, in 2015 Raj Kundra was banned for life after his involvement in the 2013 IPL betting controversy. 

Currently, Manoj Badale of Emerging Media Pvt Ltd has about 50.1% stake in the franchise. The other investors include Suresh Chellaram and Lachlan Murdoch. It is believed that Manoj Badale of Emerging Media Pvt Ltd has another 13.4% stake in the franchise from a Nigerian based company Kelowna Investment Ltd which is run by Suresh Chellaram.

Brand Value

According to a report by Duff and Phelps, Rajasthan Royals saw an 8.1% dip in its brand value in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic from INR 271 crores to INR 241 crores. However, in 2021 the brand value of the franchise has increased considerably due to their hike in the sponsorship revenue from Colgate, Jio and Red Bull.
