The Mumbai Indians is a franchise cricket team that features in the Indian Premier League representing the city of Dreams-Mumbai, Maharashtra. Founded in 2008, MI is the most successful team with five IPL titles in 14 editions of the tournament. Team India’s limited overs full time skipper Rohit Sharma captains the team in IPL. 

History

In September 2007, the BCCI announced a T20 league named IPL which will kick-off from 2008. Mumbai Indians was sold to Reliance Industries for $111.9 million. MI became the most expensive franchise at that time. RIL was owned by Mukesh Ambani who acquired the rights to the franchise for the next 10 years. 

MI bought several renowned players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga and Robin Uthappa. Sachin Tendulkar was named as the captain in the inaugural season of the cash rich league.

Owner

The five-time IPL Champions is owned by Reliance Industries (RIL). Mukesh Ambani who is the owner of RIL acquired the rights to the franchise for a period of 10 years. The chairman and MD of RIL, Mukesh Ambani is the largest stakeholder in the franchise. The franchise is co-owned by Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani and is the face of the franchise. Nita can be seen very frequently on the auction table along with her son Akash Ambani.

Brand Value

In 2008, Mumbai Indians was sold to Reliance Industries for $111.9 million. MI became the most expensive franchise in 2008. In 2017, MI became the first franchise to cross the $100 million mark in brand value among all the other franchises in the league. As of 2019, the brand value of MI is estimated to be around INR 809 crore ($115 million) which is the highest amongst all franchises for the 4th consecutive year. In 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the franchise saw a 5.9% dip in its brand value. Despite that the franchise has a brand value of INR 761 crore as of IPL 2020 which makes it to the top of the list amongst all the franchises in the league.
