Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7th July, 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar.
In his early age, he was a goalkeeper for his school’s team and was sent to play cricket by his coach. Initially drafted into the team as a wicketkeeper Dhoni rose through the ranks as he smashed the balls out of the park against the best fast bowlers in the district.
For his family, Dhoni started working as a ticket collector in Kharagpur Railway Station. Along with it he also joined the Railways Ranji Team. He caught the attention of the scouts immediately when a talent research program was run in all parts of the country by the BCCI. He was drafted into the India A team and was soon picked up for the Bangladesh tour.
Dhoni’s international career got off to an ugly start as he scored a duck in his first ODI. But the wicket-keeper batsmen was backed by the then team India skipper Sourav Ganguly. Dhoni proved his skipper right when he scored a 148-run innings against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam.
After Rahul Dravid stepped down as the skipper, He was handed the duties of leading the side. He won the inaugural season of the ICC T20 World Cup and shocked people all around the globe. Dhoni then led Team India to the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
In the inaugural season of the IPL, Dhoni was picked by Chennai Super Kings for a whooping bid of INR 6 crore. Dhoni became the most expensive player in that season. CSK reached to the finals of the tournament but lost to Rajasthan Royals.
In the following season, MSD became the second highest run getter in the team but remained one step behind the finals. In 2010, CSK won their maiden IPL trophy.
Dhoni justified his price tag let another time by winning the 2011 edition of IPL. The Yellow army became the runners up in the next seasons of the league. In 2013, Dhoni was the third highest run getter in the tournament.
But in the year 2015, CSK were allegedly involved in a spot fixing scandal and were banned for two years. Because of which all the CSK players were spread out and MSD was drafted into the Rising Pune Super Giants team. But in 2016, Dhoni’s team suffered a one run loss against MI in the finals.
In 2018, CSK made a comeback in the tournament after two years of absence. He scored 455 runs in that year and took his side to glory for the third time. In 2021, MSD went on to add another title for CSK making the franchise the second most successful in the league after Mumbai Indians.

The 40-year-old has been retained for INR 12 crore for the upcoming edition of IPL. As it stands, Dhoni has a net worth of INR 819 crore including all his assets. He is the second richest Indian athlete.
