IPL 2022: Top 5 Players Punjab Kings can target in the Mega auctions

Punjab Kings have thought of rebuilding their squad and have therefore gone for only two players-Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh. With this, they are left with a pursue budget of INR 72 crores. The Punjab based franchise are left with a lot of money and will be in a race to sign a number of key players in the auctions.

Here’s have a look at five players Punjab Kings can target in the mega auctions:

1) Trent Boult

Punjab Kings had a lot of quality fast bowling options from Mohammad Shami to Chris Jordan to Jhye Richardson. But the franchise decided to go without any of them. They only picked up young left arm bowler Arshdeep Singh.

While another left armer the franchise can have a look at is New Zealand’s Trent Boult. Boult formed a great duo with MI during his two year stay with the team.

In 2021, the Kiwi pacer picked up 13 wickets in 14 games. Boult is at the top of the list of possible targets for Punjab.

2) Steve Smith

Smith who was released by Rajasthan Royals in 2021 auctions can be one of the crucial picks for Punjab Kings. The Australian attracted a price of INR 2.2 crore last season for DC. However, Smith’s performance in the league was just not that great. He only scored 152 runs in 16 games at an average of 25.33.

As a leader, Smith has taken RPS into the finals of the tournament in the past but eventually lost to MI. Smith could play a similar role in the team who are in need of a skipper.

3) Jofra Archer

Punjab Kings have a keen interest towards young fast bowlers who have an extraordinary pace to offer. Jofra Archer fits into that criterion perfectly. The Englishmen is known for his budding pace and his hard-hitting skills with the bat. Archer who plays for RR missed both the legs of the 2021 edition of IPL due to an injury.

In IPL 2020, he scalped 20 wickets in 14 games at an economy of 6.56. Punjab who concede a lot of runs in the death overs can acquire the services of the Englishman who is good at bowling Yorkers.

4) David Warner

Punjab Kings will be in search of a player to replace KL Rahul in the opening slot. They also in need of a leader like the 35-year-old Australian.

Warner has not been retained by SRH this season. Warner would be a vital asset for the team as he can play both as an opener and as a captain. Warner is the first overseas player to reach to the 5000-run landmark in the IPL.

5) Ravi Bishnoi

The 21-year-old leg spinner for Rajasthan is one of Punjab Kings very recent discovery. He was picked up in the IPL 2020 auctions. He made his debut in the same year and picked up the wicket of Rishabh Pant in his first game. He finished the season with 12 wickets to his name. He was named as the Emerging player of the season. In the following season, Bishnoi picked up another 12 wickets at an economy of 6.35.

It was also rumored that Bishnoi will be one of the players to be retained by Punjab Kings alongside Mayank and Arshdeep. But unfortunately, that did not happen. The franchise would like to go with their young leggie who has performed decently in his first couple of seasons.
