IPL 2022: 5 Overseas players who might go Unsold in the Mega Auction

From the very first season of the Indian Premier League, teams have only been allowed to use a maximum of 4 overseas players in their Playing XI and this rule stands unchanged to this date. As a result, foreign player picks are one of the most vital parts of IPL auctions and franchises battle it out to have the best overseas players in their squad while the others are straightaway rejected.

It is thus obviously harder for an overseas player to make way into an IPL team than an Indian player as the seats available are limited.

With the introduction of two new teams, more foreign players will get a chance to feature in the IPL this year but a huge number of them will also go unsold.

In this article we will discuss 5 Star overseas players who might go Unsold in IPL 2022’s mega auction.

5 Overseas Players who might go Unsold in IPL 2022’s Mega Auction

  1. Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is undeniably one of the All time greatests in T20 cricket let alone the Indian Premier League. After playing 142 matches in IPL, he has scored 4965 runs making him the 7th highest run scorer in the tournament’s history.

The West Indies run-machine was initially unsold in the 2018 auction but was later bought by Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) for 2 Crores. He spent the next 3 years at the same franchise. Gayle, however, is nearing his retirement now and the teams will probably not consider him any more for their squads as he will play for a year or two more at best.

  1. Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir was a part of Chennai Super Kings’ IPL winning squad in the 2021 season but he barely had a role to play in it. He played only 1 match in IPL 2021, picked up 2 wickets and that was pretty much it.

However when we see all time stats of the South African spinner in the Indian Premier League, things start falling into place a lot more. Imrah Tahir is an absolute legend in T20 cricket. In the IPL alone, he has picked up 82 wickets in just 59 matches and was a core part of CSK’s title winning season in 2018. However, he is over 42 years old now and his time to shine in the Indian Premier League is probably gone now.

  1. Joe Root

Joe Root is one of the finest talents in the Cricketing world that is yet to play a single season in the Indian Premier League. Despite his brilliant performances in International cricket over the years, Joe Root always goes unsold in IPL auctions every year. It is probably because he excels in ODI and Test cricket and that is probably why he will go unsold this year as well.

  1. Devon Conway

Devon Conway was one of the finds of the year 2021. He has been an absolute blessing for New Zealand in test cricket and was one of the core members of their WTC winning team. He also did a great job in the T20 World Cup and was a responsible middle order batsman for the Kiwis.

Unfortunately for him, the competition for overseas players will be tremendously high this season in the mega auction and he will probably not be in the checklist of the 10 franchises as he did not do anything miraculous in T20 cricket whatsoever.

  1. Tom Curran

Tom Curran was an important part of Delhi Capitals’ squad last season – not in terms of number of matches played but in terms of the importance of matches that he featured in. Tom Curran might have played in only 3 matches last season but the playoffs against Chennai Super Kings was one of them. He in fact got the crucial last over against CSK but Delhi ended up losing the game. Tom Curran picked up 4 wickets in those 3 matches.

He thus got his chances but pretty much failed to impress last season. In the international stages too, Tom Curran did not do much for the England National team. There is thus a high chance that Tom Curran might go unsold in IPL 2022’s mega auction.
