Delhi Capitals: History, Performance in IPL, Owner, Brand Value and All you need to know

The Delhi Capitals is a franchise cricket team that features in the Indian Premier League and represents the capital of the country Delhi. The team plays its home games in Arun Jaitley Stadium earlier known by the name of Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Established in 2008, the franchise has played in all 14 editions of the tournament but has failed to win a title. Delhi Capitals is led by the 24-year-old Indian Wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant. Delhi Capitals appeared in the finals in IPL 2020 for the first time but were defeated by Mumbai Indians. Delhi capitals is jointly owned by GMR Group and JSW Group. 

History

In 2007 when the BCCI announced the establishment of all the eight city based franchise T20 league, the team representing Delhi was bought by GMR Group for $84 million. In the year 2018, GMR Group sold its 50% stake to JSW Group for INR 550 crores. The team’s name was therefore changed to ‘Delhi Capitals’ from ‘Delhi Daredevils’.

In the inaugural season of the tournament, Delhi bought the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Shikhar Dhawan. Delhi won their initial two matches against RR and Deccan Chargers. After losing a game against KXIP, the team won two matches back-to-back. However, Delhi lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champions Rajasthan Royals.

Owner

In 2008, the team representing Delhi was bought by GMR Group for $84 million. However, in 2018 GMR Group sold 50% of its stake to JSW for INR 550 crores. The co-ownership deal between the two companies involves a swap of leading the team management for every two years starting from the 2019 season of IPL. The 2019 and 2020 edition of IPL is managed by JSW Group’s Chairman Parth Jindal. For the next two seasons, Kiran Kumar Grandhi of GMR Group will be leading the team. 

Brand Value

In 2019 and 2020, the franchise witnessed some great results financially. In 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic, Delhi saw the least dip, about 1% in its brand value. According to a report by Duff and Phelps, Delhi Capitals was valued at INR 374 crore in IPL 2019. As of 2020, the brand value of the franchise stands at INR 370 crores.
