David Warner is undoubtedly the most successful overseas player in the history of IPL

David Warner: Profile

David Andrew Warner is an Australian international cricketer who was born on 27th October 1986 in Paddington, Sydney. During his teenage, he was asked by his coach to switch to right hand because he used to keep hitting the ball in the air. But the southpaw continued to bat with his left hand and broke the Under-16s run scoring record for the Sydney Coastal Cricket Club.

Warner hit his first century while playing for New South Wales in the domestic circuit in 2008. The unbeaten 165 run knock took him to the record of the highest individual score by a Blues player. Soon after that Warner made his international debut in 2009 against SA at the MCG.

The southpaw was picked up by Delhi Daredevils for the first time in the IPL in 2009. Warner played seven games in which he managed to score 163 runs at an average of 23.28 and at a strike rate of 123.48.

In 2011, Warner became the first batsmen to score two successive tons in T20 cricket. He scored an unbeaten 135 against CSK and smashed an unbeaten 123 against RCB in the CLT20.

In the 2014 edition of the IPL, he was picked up in the auctions by SRH for 880k USD. In the following season he was named as the captain of the squad. Although he failed to make his team reach to the playoffs stage, but on an individual level his performance was just top class. He won the orange cap for scoring the most number of runs (562).

Under his leadership, SRH won their ever IPL trophy in 2016 by beating RCB in the finals. Warner finished the season becoming the second highest scorer of the tournament as he smashed a total of 848 runs.

In 2017, he again won the orange cap as he scored 641 runs in the season. In the 2018 edition of IPL, Warner was retained by SRH but he stepped down from the position following his ball tampering case against SA. The BCCI also made it clear that Warner cannot lead his side in 2018 IPL.

After a one-year ban, Warner marked his return in the cash rich league by scoring 85 off 53 deliveries against KKR. He won the orange cap again by scoring 692 runs.

In 2020, Warner was made the captain of the side replacing Kane Williamson. In that season, Warner became the first overseas player and the fourth overall to score 5000 runs in the tournament. It took him 135 innings to reach to that milestone which made him the fastest player.

SRH were going through a rough time in the 2021 season of IPL. They had only secured a victory in the first six games. That was when Warner decided to step down as the skipper and handed over the duties to Kane Williamson. During the second leg of the tournament, he was dropped from the playing XI after playing just two matches. He later made it clear in his official Instagram handle that he would not longer be a part of the franchise for the remainder of the season.
