The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a franchise cricket team based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu which features in the Indian Premier League. CSK was founded in the year 2008 and they play their home games in the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The franchise was suspended for two years in 2015 due to their owner’s involvement in the IPL 2013 betting case. CSK is the second most successful team in the league with four IPL titles. CSK are the defending champions having won the tournament in IPL 2021. The side has been led by MS Dhoni ever since it was established. CSK holds the record for the most number of appearances in playoffs (11) and have reached the finals on 9 different occasions. 

History

In 2008 when the BCCI announced the establishment of the IPL, CSK was sold to India Cements for $91 million. It became the fourth most expensive team in the league after Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Former ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan who was the vice-chairman and the managing director of India Cements Pvt Ltd acquired the rights to the franchise for a period of 10 years. 

CSK picked up MS Dhoni, Matthew Hayden, Stephen Fleming, Michael Hussey and Muttiah Muralitharan in its very first season. Dhoni was made the captain of the team and was the most expensive player in the auctions as CSK bought him for $1.5 million.

Owner

CSK was sold to India Cements Pvt Ltd in 2008 when the BCCI announced the establishment of the league. N. Srinivasan who was the vice-chairman and the MD of India Cements acquired the rights to the franchise for a period of 10 years. However, in 2014 the franchise was transferred to Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited after the Supreme Court struck down the controversial amendment to the BCCI constitution’s clause 6.2.4 that allowed board officials to have a commercial interest in the IPL. As of now the franchise is handled by CEO Kasi Viswanathan.

Brand Value

In 2019, CSK’s brand value was estimated to be around INR 732 crores. According to a report by Duff and Phelps, the brand value of the franchise saw a massive dip of 16.5% in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As of 2020, the brand value of CSK stands at INR 611 crores.
